Two Thirds of Bulgarians Approve of Borisov’s First Steps, a Poll of the National Center for the Study of Public Opinion (NZIOM) Reveals

The poll conducted upon the appointment of the new GERB cabinet is not the first public opinion poll after the democratic changes in our country, to account for the largest public support extended to a new government. The results reveal extremely high expectations of the major part of society towards those in power. This is precisely where one of the main risks faced by the “Borisov” cabinet is hidden since with the continuing exposure of the former government, their heirs continue to exacerbate the public desire for change and repercussions. As result, the expectations towards GERB become more and more like a balloon that is been blown to extreme proportions and its eventual burst would be spectacular. ...

The Universities’ Budgets Are Being Cut Down

The information about education budget cuts, even in times of economic crisis, is alarming. In addition, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sciences is among the institutions with largest resource reductions of 20 million leva. All Bulgarian State Universities will be deprived of nearly 8 million leva, while the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAN), (regardless of its arguable usefulness in its current state) with 1,500,000 leva. The desire of the government to quickly find funds to fill the huge budget gap they inherited by their predecessors is understandable. The First Nominations for Mayor of Sofia in the Fall

The upcoming partial elections for mayor of Sofia are charged with political pressure extending way beyond the personality of the city’s Head. A simple calculation shows that November 15, the scheduled date of the vote, happens to be slightly over 100 days after the appointment of the GERB cabinet. From this viewpoint, the elections would be a somewhat assessment the voters will make of the country’s new rule. Currently, different sociological studies show continuous support for the actions of the cabinet, but it is a well-known fact that the winter is the time when some factors such as social discontent, triggered by economic hardship, escalate. Further, if in the first month of its rule the new government is satisfied with just investigating the violations of their predecessors, the expectations about its first 100 days are much greater. ...
